IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William "Bill"
E. Liegel
December 26, 1942 – December 19, 2020
William "Bill" Edward Liegel, age 77, passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2020 in Goodyear, AZ from complications of a recent stroke. Originally from Wisconsin, Bill recently retired to the warmer climates of Arizona with the love of his life for the last 27 years, Judy Radl.
He was born December 26, 1942 to the late Edward and Alma (Ring) Liegel. Bill attended and graduated from St. Luke's Catholic School in Plain, WI, with the class of 1961. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, which included a short stay in Germany for training. He served 3 years active duty and 3 years in the reserves, during which he attended MATC in the Diesel Mechanic program. He was united in marriage to Norma Bryant on February 4, 1967 and they raised 4 daughters together in Prairie du Sac. He was an excellent role model for them and others, displaying strength, compassion, integrity, determination, and unconditional love in everything he did. He was well-respected in the community and made an impact on everyone he met due to the many hats he wore. He had a twinkle in his eye and a contagious laugh that put a smile on everyone's face.
Bill was always a hard worker and passed that on to his kids. He began working on the home farm at a young age, learning everything he could about farming and about fixing things. As a young man, he worked at the International Harvester dealership in Prairie du Sac. Soon after, he and his business partner started L&N Tractor Repair. Bill enjoyed farming so much that he and his best friend and brother, Ken, purchased Evergreen Farm together near Plain, WI. They spent many long hours picking rocks, working the fields, baling hay, and everything else that goes into running a successful crop and beef cattle farm. In addition to owning L&N, and working at Evergreen Farm, Bill started his own Custom Farming business, where he planted, baled, and combined for other farmers in this area.
Aside from work and farming, Bill loved his family more than anything. His daughters, "the girls", have so many great memories and traditions because of him. From a young age, he took them camping every summer. He never missed the annual camping trip on Memorial Day, which almost always involved White Mound, tents, and cold and pouring rain. As his daughters got married and had kids of their own, they continued that tradition. The grandkids looked forward to camping with him every summer. Bill was also a lifelong hunter and enjoyed fishing as well. He looked forward to going to the hunting shack with his buddies and on fishing trips to Canada with some of his brothers and sons-in-law. After having 4 girls, it was such a treat for him to have 4 sons-in-law who loved hunting and fishing just as much as he did. The bond he developed with them was almost as strong as the one he had with his girls.
Bill met Judy in 1993, and together they spent the next 27 years together making memories. As he began to retire, they were fortunate enough to be able to travel together. They had the opportunity to go to Hawaii, Mexico, and Costa Rica. After Judy retired, they spent time looking for warm weather and finally decided on Arizona. They made many new friends and spent time playing board games, driving the golf cart and, finally, slowing down and relaxing after a life full of sweat and hard work. It was a well-deserved time of his life and his daughters are so grateful he had Judy to spend it with.
Bill was proud of so many things in his life, but he was especially proud of his 13 grandchildren who brought him pure joy. Another proud moment of his life was that he had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. on a Badger Honor Flight on April 22, 2017. He and Judy were able to do that together and that was so incredibly special to him. He was lovingly and patriotically welcomed home by his family and friends. The pride in his eyes and the smile on his face told the story of how much that day meant to him.
Bill is survived by his longtime love, Judy Radl; his daughters, Julie (Jeff) Miller, Sandra (Tim) Enge, Sheri (Paul) Ranzenberger, Jenny (Nathan) Pickhard; Judy's children, Kristin Gaulke and Nathan (Stephanie) Radl; 13 grandchildren, Kaitlyn & Kassandra Miller, Dawson & Bella Enge, Gage & Addisyn Ranzenberger, Dakota, Luke, & Natalie Pickhard; Nicholas & Kendra Gaulke, and Sabrina & Marissa Radl; his former wife, Norma (Don) Hallowell; siblings, Rita (Jim) Gundry, Larry (Gail) Liegel, Pat (Dave) Blakeslee, Ed (Mary Jayne) Liegel, Lois (Bernie) O'Donnell, Mark Liegel, Roger (Rita) Liegel, Leslie (Linda) Liegel, and Rodney Liegel; and sisters in-law, Sue Liegel and Shelley Liegel. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 6 siblings, Phyllis Dischler, Margaret Liegel, Joyce Liegel, Ken Liegel, Paul Liegel, Terry Liegel, and a sister in-law, Corinne Liegel. He was further preceded in death by many aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
